Why gold futures were traded largest volume in December?

COMEX-traded Gold futures operate on a two month cycle (Feb, Apr, Jun, Aug, Oct, Dec).

However, for historical reasons the October contract is far less traded than the December contract and many traders do not include the October contract into their analysis.

For example, the Oct 2006 delivery peaked at an open interest of just under 24,000 contracts whereas the Dec 2006 delivery peak open interest is around 210,000 contracts. The Aug 2006 delivery had a peak of 197,000 contracts and the June 2006 delivery had a peak of 260,000 contracts.

So there’s nothing special about Dec 2006 other than most traders skip the Oct 2006 delivery.
